When to go, how long you need, and a ready-made day plan for a smooth Princes' Islands trip.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal — mild weather, green hills and thinner crowds. Summer is glorious but very busy, and the last ferries back can be a scrum. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, but many cafés and beach clubs close and ferries thin out.
Weekday over weekend, early over late. The first morning ferries (around 07:00–08:00) reach the islands before the day-trippers — the calmest, prettiest time to arrive.
Weather month by month
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the sweet spot — mild and green. July–August is hot and swimmable but crowded, especially at weekends. November–March is quiet and moody, with many beach clubs and seasonal cafés closed and ferries less frequent. The sea is comfortably warm for swimming from about June to September.
What a day costs
The islands themselves are free — you only pay to get there and for what you choose to do. As a rough 2026 guide: a budget day (ferries, a casual lunch, snacks) runs about ₺1,000–1,400 (≈ €18–25) per person; a mid-range day adding a seafood lunch, a beach club and the museum is around ₺2,600–3,200 (≈ €47–58). Turkish prices change fast — treat these as indicative. Where to eat on the islands →
How long do I need?
Give yourself a full day for Büyükada alone. Start early and you can add a second island — usually Heybeliada. It's doable as a half-day, but you'll be rushing the best parts.
A perfect Büyükada day plan
- Early ferry from the city — grab a window seat and enjoy the crossing.
- Clock Tower & Saat Meydanı by the pier — get your bearings.
- Mansion streets — a slow wander past the Belle Époque timber villas.
- Aya Yorgi — the steep climb to the hilltop monastery and its view.
- Lunch — seafood by the harbour or a simple island café.
- Beach or bike — swim in a cove, or pedal the pine-shaded coast road.
- Museum of the Princes' Islands (optional) before a mid-afternoon ferry back.
Practical tips
- Money: carry cash and a card. ATMs cluster near the piers.
- Food: harbour restaurants are lovely but pricier than the mainland; cafés and bakeries are cheaper.
- Footwear: the lanes are cobbled and Aya Yorgi is steep — wear comfortable shoes.
- Sun & water: little shade on the climb; bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
Staying over
Most people visit on a day trip, but an overnight stay lets you enjoy the islands after the day-trippers leave. Where to stay on Büyükada →
Staying overnight on Büyükada?
Once the day-trippers leave, the island turns quiet and golden. Compare hotels and free-cancellation rooms.
