Is Büyükada Worth Visiting?

The honest answer — what's genuinely special, what to expect, and how to make sure you enjoy it.

Short answer: yes — Büyükada is well worth a day, as long as you go with the right expectations.

What's genuinely special

A car-free island of pine woods and Belle Époque mansions, an hour from one of the world's biggest cities, crowned by the Aya Yorgi monastery with its sweeping Marmara view. The ferry ride itself is half the pleasure.

What to expect

In summer and on weekends it gets very busy, and the last ferries back are a scrum. It's touristy near the pier, and harbour food is pricier than the mainland.

How to love it

Go early on a weekday (or in spring/autumn), climb Aya Yorgi, rent a bike, find a quieter beach, and leave before the evening rush. Do that, and Büyükada delivers. See the full visit guide →
